Lp(a) assembly, secretion, and inhibition by nucleic acid-targeted therapies. Lp(a) is an LDL-like particle bound to APOA protein encoded by LPA gene. After transcription of LPA gene, Apo(a) mRNA is translated into Apo(a) protein. The first step of Lp(a) assembly occurs within the cell, where Apo(a) protein is coupled with LDL-sized particle. Upon secretion into the surface, Lp(a) extracellular assembly takes place. Inhibition of Apo(a) mRNA or LPA gene results in Lp(a) reduction.
