‘5 A’ strategy
AskAcknowledge all smokers at each visit (enter smoking data in history collection).
AdviseSend a strong, clear, and personalized message, convincing every smoker to quit.
AssessAssess willingness to quit smoking at each visit.
AssistAdvise the patient to develop a plan including a quit date, identify sources of help to quit smoking among family and friends, eliminate sources of failure from the environment. Provide advice, educational materials, and suggest behavioural interventions. Advise the use of drug therapy with varenicline, bupropion, and nicotine.
ArrangeMeet with the patient shortly after cessation to assess the success of the intervention. If unsuccessful, identify obstacles, and solutions.
