Cells were counted in both the L1 and L2 layers. Shoot apical meristems of mature embryos were sectioned (see Materials and methods) and photographed. Cell number and cell area were measured using ACCESS imaging software. Perfect median longitudinal sections of at least 20 embryos were used for analysis in each genotype. Means ±SE are shown. All values for areas and cell numbers obtained in the 35:HBK3 embryos are statistically different from those recorded in control embryos (P <0.01).
