It Could Lead to Dancing: Mixed-Sex Dancing and Jewish Modernity

This is a book about mobility: of dancing bodies, shifting social expectations, and migration from towns to cities and across national borders. It is perhaps fitting that I wrote most of it during a period of my life when I was almost constantly in motion. Large portions of the manuscript were written and revised on intercity trains across Europe, Israel, and the United States. During the five most intensive years of research and writing, I essentially moved internationally an average of more than once a year and was the fortunate recipient of home hospitality from friends, family, and friends-of-friends more often than I can count. This path was not one I could have anticipated, nor one I would recommend lightly. While my trajectory was in many ways determined by the reality of an interdisciplinary academic career in the humanities, I have found that my circuitous journey, my access to international archives, and the many experiences I accumulated along the way have enriched my project immeasurably.
