Abstract
This chapter talks about the concept of the “colonial subject” and its relation to recent writings about South Asia. It looks at the impacts of historical anthropology on writing about South Asia, Michel Foucault, Edward Said, and Subaltern Studies. The main argument in this chapter is for a positive view on the “colonial subject” and his agency, instead of a passive view where the “colonial subject” is merely created by the colonial state.
