In this Editorial, we give a status report on the current position and strategies we are adopting for the journal SLEEP. This is the journal of the Sleep Research Society and the Australasian Sleep Research Society. The current team of Editors (Allan Pack, Editor-in-Chief; David Gozal, Senior Deputy Editor; Antoine Adamantidis, Deputy Editor; Katie Stone, Deputy Editor) are seeking to further improve the status of the journal as the leading international journal for original sleep and circadian research. We believe we are well-positioned to do this and rely on a wonderful cast of Associate Editors who provide extensive and in-depth coverage of nearly every topic related to sleep. We have a companion journal—Sleep Advances—that has been established under the leadership of Dr. Mary Carskadon, the Founding Editor. Articles that do not make the high bar for acceptance in SLEEP can be transferred to Sleep Advances along with the reviewers’ critiques. In addition to seeking to publish the best original research, we are committed to seeing our journal being a place for vigorous scientific discussion on the key issues of our time. To facilitate this, we have introduced several new article types—Perspectives (robustly documented scientific opinion pieces), Pro/Con Debates, and Forums on arising hot topics in the field of sleep science and medicine. Pro/Con debates have two separate articles—one laying out the PRO side, including a rebuttal of the CON argument for a declarative statement and one giving the CON argument and rebuttal. A Forum seeks to obtain different opinions, supported by evidence, on a controversial topic. Hence, the article has multiple authors. We have published several of these new article types over the last two years and will continue to do so.
