Abstract

The International Commission on Radiological Protection has published biokinetic and dosimetric models for assessing doses and risks from intakes of radionuclides but these are generally based on the behaviour of pure compounds or of radionuclides associated with foodstuffs. The uptake of radionuclides into particulates with varying degrees of solubility can substantially influence their behaviour in the body after intakes by inhalation or ingestion and hence the consequences of exposure. This paper aims to illustrate how the incorporation of a number of radiologically significant radionuclides into particulates of varying solubility can influence the risk of long-term effects.
