Abstract

The instruments available for personal exposure logging to ELF fields have benefited from the continuous and rapid improvements in modern electronics. More powerful and compact microcontrollers have made personal logging less intrusive, facilitated use of the mail to distribute loggers to subjects (and for return), and allowed loggers to perform real-time computation of summary statistics concurrent with data collection. The future of ELF exposure logging will probably focus on: different aspects of magnetic field exposure, sub-populations of interest (for whom no real exposure data exists, such as operators of commercial sewing machines or service industry jobs identified as having higher exposures), and characterisation of nationwide exposures of the general public for baseline comparisons (similar to the EMF Rapid 1000 Person Study). In addition, three new areas for ELF logging may emerge: electric fields, transients, and contact currents; each of which has challenges for exposure logging instruments.
