Abstract

The session reviewed existing and alternative metrics for ELF (extremely low frequency) exposure assessment in both the occupational and residential settings. Methodologic issues in conducting ELF studies were also discussed. It was agreed that time-weighted average ELF magnetic field exposure should continue to be measured in future studies, but that new metrics, which were hypothesis and evidence-driven, and which provided information on components of ELF not yet assessed, were suggested. These include measurement of harmonics, transients, and intermittency measures. New, high quality studies, building on the results of previous work, and incorporating new measures, were recommended for both adult and childhood groups. International collaboration, including WHO coordination of research development, and industry support was encouraged.
