Abstract
Thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of BaSO4:Eu Teflon discs (punched out from BaSO4:Eu Teflon sheet received from Nemoto and Co. Ltd., Japan) were compared with CaSO4:Dy Teflon discs (BARC make) of similar dimensions. The TL sensitivity of BaSO4:Eu discs was 5.8 and 11.0 times that of the CaSO4:Dy disc when they were compared on two TL readers, developed locally, having EMI 9524A and EMI 6255S photomultiplier tubes. The TL peak temperature of BaSO4:Eu Teflon discs occurs at about 220oC which is nearly the same as that for CaSO4:Dy discs. The photon energy dependence factor of these BaSO4:Eu Teflon discs at 52 keV as compared to that at 60Co gamma energy was about 52; the corresponding photon energy dependence factor for CaSO4:Dy discs was about 9 at 32 keV. The dose vs TL response for 60Co gamma-radiation was studied in the dose range 1.0 mGy to 1.0 Gy and was found to linear. The intrinsic UV (253.7 nm) response of these BaSO4:Eu discs was 3378 times that of CaSO4:Dy. TL fading of the exposed discs due to direct exposure to room light (at an intensity of 300 lux) for 8 h was 14% as compared to 5% for CaSO4:Dy.
