This is a correction: Paola Giuliano, Nathan Nunn, Understanding Cultural Persistence and Change, The Review of Economic Studies, Volume 88, Issue 4, July 2021, Pages 1541–1581, https://doi.org/10.1093/restud/rdaa074
Since the publication of the article, imprecisions in wording and omissions in the text have been pointed out. The authors thank Simone Bertoli, Melchior Clerc, Jordan Loper, and Eric Roca Fernandez for notifying them of these. The changes are as follows:
- 1.
On page 1557, “mother tongue” should be “language spoken at home.”
- 2.
On page 1562, the sentence ending in “denotes the inclusion of residence (i.e. metropolitan-area) fixed effects” should be followed by the clarifying footnote: “Rural locations within the United States do not have an MSA code. Throughout the paper, we treat a missing MSA as a category in the residence fixed effects.”
- 3.
On page 1562, the text “whose parents are immigrants who were born outside the U.S.,c indexes the origin country of the individual's parents” should be “with a parent born outside the U.S., c indexes the origin country of the individual's immigrant parent”.
- 4.
On page 1565, for the text “report their ancestry as being a non-English speaking country,” the word “country” should be “group”.
- 5.
In footnote 24, the text “individuals from origin countries with English as an official language.” should be “individuals from ancestries with English as an official language and the language of instruction in higher education.” Similarly, on page 5 of the online appendix, the text “countries for which English is an official language.” should be “ancestries for which English is an official language and the language of instruction in higher education.”
- 6.
On page 1572, the text “Estimates of equation (9) are reported” should be “Estimates of a version of equation (9) that pools all census years and includes census year fixed effects are reported”. Similarly, on page 1574, the text “Estimates of equation (10)” should be “Estimates of equation (10) for all census years and with census year fixed effects”.
These details have been corrected only in this correction notice to preserve the published version of record.
