I began the prospectus for this project in the fall of 2012. At that time, I saved a document on my computer titled “Thank Yous,” knowing even before I started my dissertation that I would accrue many debts in writing it. Now that I am finished with the book, I have amassed quite a list; so please bear with me. As always, while this project could not have been completed without the help and support of the many listed here, all errors are my own.
First and foremost, I thank my dissertation committee at Princeton University: chair Amaney Jamal, Christopher Achen, Carles Boix, and Grigore Pop-Eleches. While all four committee members contributed immensely to this book by both encouraging and challenging me, Amaney deserves special mention. Amaney first served as my advisor, and has since become a coauthor, mentor, and friend. I have learned so much by watching her tireless and selfless approach to research, to teaching, to advising her students, and to advancing the field of Middle East politics. I am a better scholar due to her patient encouragement and high standards, as well as the innumerable opportunities she made available to me. I also thank politics faculty members Mark Beissinger, Rory Truex, and Deborah Yashar, as well as Alin Coman from Princeton’s psychology department, who provided tremendously helpful feedback on the project at various stages. Duringmy doctoral research, I received financial support from the Center for the Study of Religion, the Fellowship of Woodrow Wilson Scholars, the Fund for Experimental Social Sciences, and the Mamdouha S. Bobst Center for Peace and Justice.
