this book is dedicated to Donald Winch, who appointed me to a lectureship in intellectual history at the University of Sussex in 1993, and then acted as mentor and friend for the following twenty-four years. This is the first book of mine over which his critical eye has not passed; I miss him greatly. Others whom I relied upon have died since my last book appeared, including Istvan Hont, Nicholas Phillipson and my close friend at St Andrews, Nick Rengger. I’m happy to have been involved, or to be involved, either with the publication of books in their honour, or with the acquisition of their papers for St Andrews Special Collections and the Institute of Intellectual History.
A large number of people have helped me to complete this work. Special thanks go, as they always do, to Knud Haakonssen, Béla Kapossy and Michael Sonenscher. I’m grateful for the advice and comments of Richard Bourke, James Harris, John Pocock, Martyn Powell, Gabriel Sabbagh, Louise Seaward, Quentin Skinner, Max Skjönsberg, James Stafford, Koen Stapelbroek, Lina Weber and Amy Westwell, all of whom read some or all of the book in draft form. Martyn Powell was singularly generous in guiding me towards sources I was unaware of, in helping me to get the facts right about Ireland and in sharing his own work. Large thanks go too to all of the people who, through conversation or through their own work, have helped me in formulating the arguments to be found herein, whether they were aware of this or not, including Thomas Ahrnert, Manuela Albertone, Ali Ansari, David Armitage, Toby Barnard, Cyprian Blamires, Annabel Brett, Clarissa Campbell Orr, Dario Castiglione, Emmanuelle de Champs, Greg Claeys, J.C.D.
