Introduction
In January 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published a report reviewing the health effects of cannabis and its potential for therapeutic use in humans, hereafter called “the report” (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2017). There had been previous reports from the Academy on this topic, covering a large and often inconclusive body of evidence. The impetus for this latest report was fostered by movements in many states, as well as other social, economic, and political forces promoting the legalization and application of cannabis and its derivatives for adult and medicinal purposes. The objectives of this spotlight are to briefly review the findings of the report as they relate to older adults and to offer some suggestions for future research on where health investigations should proceed, particularly with regard to the impact of cannabis use on the health of older persons.
