As with every book, this has been a long process of discussion, research, reflection and debate. Although any errors are of course mine, the whole text has involved so much from many people – not least the survivors of violence and women seeking asylum who gave insight into the realities of violence and violation. Moreover, those who work at the fore of responding to torture and torturous violence are often overlooked in wider research and scholarly writings. This means that the very people who hear disclosures, watch structural and political shifts in state and organizational responses, and even see the wider sociopolitical implications of persecution, war, failed states, repression and conflict, are not central to some academic discussions. They also often see conflict and torturous violence in places that we like to pretend it isn’t: the home, families and other everyday social institutions.
First thanks go to Antonia, Asma, Faiza, Jazmine, Mahira and Nour for spending time building oral histories. Endless thanks also to Migrant Artists Mutual Aid, and particularly Jen, Amina, Shani, Elizabeth and Anstey.
