My greatest thanks to all the violence survivors and activists, practitioners and researchers on violence against women, and to the women from the women’s liberation movement, who talked with me and provided information for this book. It is immeasurably strengthened by their input which has made it, at least partially, a collective endeavour to celebrate the movements we all made.
Invaluable input, consultation and referral to key others were provided by Rebecca Dobash, and a quote to bring the book to a close was generously offered by Jalna Hanmer. Interviews (informal and lengthy) were conducted with Ann Devereaux (to whom extra thanks are due), Davina James-Hanman, Ellen Malos, Fran Wasoff, Jane Anderson, Lesley Welch, Lily Greenan, Liz Kelly, Margaret Davis, Nicola Harwin, Pragna Patel, Sarbjit Ganger, Subhaluxmi Mukherji, Teresa Parker, and six survivors who withheld their names. My deepest thanks to them all.
Those with whom I had important consultations or who are quoted in the text, to whom I am most grateful, included, most particularly, Alison Assiter and Jacky Gruhn; and also: Atuki Turner, Cath Kane, China Devereaux, D-M Withers, Eleri Butler, Emma Williamson, Evan Stark, Finn Mackay, Fiona Vera-Gray, Gail Chester, Hilary Land, Janet Bowstead, Judi Hodgkin, Kathy Willis, Leticia Mujeni, Marianne Hester, Mica Nava, Miriam David, Nazand Begikhani, Nicki Norman, Ravi Thiara, Sue O’Sullivan, Shahana Rasool and Trupti Jhaveri Panchal. Nicole Westmarland was especially helpful. Most of all, Nicola Harwin contributed to the project with tireless dedication, helping hugely with accuracy and information. A deeply-felt extra thank you to Fiona Vera-Gray for making invaluable additional suggestions on the text for streamlining and focus, which improved it greatly.
