Abstract
The National Health Service, is a politically sensitive policy area for governments, being a key public service and an indicator of the competence of governments. Health policy also entails a number of challenging problems: rising demand for health services; shortcomings in the quality of services; inefficiencies in the use of resources; problems in accessing services; inadequate coordination; and public health challenges. This chapter outlines coalition government policy and its record on health and the NHS, including the controversial reforms, funding, coordination and integration, and the relationship with social care, examining the major factors that shaped policy between 2010 and 2015. It briefly considers health policy following the election of the new Conservative government in May 2015.
