This book is based upon research which was funded by Friends Provident Foundation to whom I am very grateful. I would like to extend a special thanks to Danielle Walker-Palmour for her enthusiasm and support for this project. The research also benefited from earlier financial input by London Citizens and the School of Geography at Queen Mary, University of London. I owe a particular debt of gratitude to Zahra Gibril, Yara Evans and Irina Changerova for their invaluable contribution to this research in conducting interviews with Brazilian, Bulgarian and Somali migrant men and women. Thanks are also due to dedicated researchers and community organisers who participated in London Citizen's Summer Academy including Nil Tuptuk, Olivia Sheringham, Ana-Carla Reis França, Awale Elmi and Michal Garapich.
I would like to acknowledge the support of all of my colleagues at the School of Geography, Queen Mary, University of London, particularly Cathy McIlwaine, Jane Wills, Jon May, Yara Evans and Joanna Herbert with whom my interest in transnational migration has been developed. I am grateful to Alison Shaw, Laura Vickers and Jo Morton at The Policy Press, and their anonymous peer reviewers, for their valuable comments and patience. Thanks to my husband, Priya, as always, for putting up with this book and to my daughters, Aashna and Kinza, for being so very patient. I owe a special thanks to Aashna for her help with the figures, diagrams and photographs.
