Virtual Special Issue: RPH in JPR
After a decade in the role of Editor-in-Chief, as well as several years on the Strategic Editorial team, it is time to bid a fond farewell to Roger Harris. Roger has been an integral part of the Journal of Plankton Research (JPR) family for close to 15 years, and in addition to his EiC duties over the last 10 years, has played a massive part in shaping the journal as it is today. Through the creation of Horizons reviews to the addition of the David Cushing prize, JPR has gone from strength to strength under his guidance, consistently ranked highly in the “Marine & Freshwater Biology” and “Oceanography” categories. While Roger will be stepping down from his role at EiC at the end of 2017, he won’t be leaving us completely and still be an active member of the JPR team.
In honour of a tremendous job well done, we’ve compiled a virtual collection of key articles Roger has contributed to during his time with the journal, introduced below by Marja Koski, Associate Editor of JPR.
Roger’s JPR papers center around copepod feeding and reproduction in the North Atlantic – in fact after reading his contributions, it is difficult to imagine what more remains to be investigated on the topic. Roger and co-workers have presented grazing and / or reproduction rates of diverse copepods in relation to seasonal development of phytoplankton, fronts and turbulence, stratified and well-mixed water columns and latitude. Their results reveal a number of important patterns, such as the importance of microzooplankton and internal reserves for copepod reproduction outside the phytoplankton bloom periods, the effect of turbulence on feeding rates, and the properties of predator-prey relationships which may contribute to the bloom initiation, to mention a few. Roger and co-workers were already in the beginning of 1990s investigating the effect of copepods on vertical flux, by looking into coprophagy and diurnal patterns in vertical distribution and gut chlorophyll – topics which still feature in many research proposals today. Throughout the JPR papers, Roger and co-workers have divided zooplankton in size classes, considering Oithona spp., small neritic species like Acartia spp. or Pseudocalanus elongatus and Calanus spp. separately, which gives great insights into the different functions of these species in the marine food webs – also something which has been increasingly recognized only in recent years. Other topics which feature in the JPR papers of Roger and co-workers are long-term changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton, predation on Calanus spp. by Sagitta species and estimates of the enzyme activity as a measure of production.
Roger’s JPR contributions over the last 25 years thus span through many important research topics, including both extensive field studies and detailed lab experiments; in fact, I have several times come to google a RPH contribution when looking for material for widely diverse zooplankton topics. In my past student days in Finland PLM and Roger Harris (and JPR, come to that) represented something similar to Roskilde Music Festival – the place where you someday really wanted to be.
- Marja Koski, Associate Editor.
