This Special Issue of Oxford Economic Papers is dedicated to the memory of Ansgar Belke. Ansgar passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 55 years. Ansgar was an amazing person, a lovely human being and a great supporter of the International Conference on Macroeconomic Analysis and International Finance almost from its inception. He supported students and young academics with great passion, and he was highly regarded by the international research community. He remained modest and reserved despite his successes. Ansgar had an open ear and a friendly word for everyone. A loving family man, he is survived by his wife Claudia and their three children, Anna-Pia, Henrik, and Lennart.

Ansgar earned his Ph.D. from the University of Bochum in 1995. He became Full Professor of Applied Macroeconomics and Economic Policy at the University of Vienna in 2000 and joined the University of Hohenheim as Full Professor of International Economics in 2001. He joined the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2007, where he was Full Professor of Macroeconomics and Director of the Institute of Business and Economic Studies (IBES). From 2012, he held the position of ad personam Jean Monnet Professor. Among his many distinguished affiliations, he was Research Fellow of IZA Bonn, a member of the Adjunct Faculty Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ), and Visiting Professor at the Europa-Institute at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, and the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin.
