Abstract
Chapter 4 considers the changes in Williamsburg’s most public sphere— the neighborhood’s main commercial street. This chapter investigates the role of local shops in the trajectory of gentrification, pairing ethnographic description with quantitative data of retail change, and the accounts of residents and store owners. This evolution of Williamsburg’s Bedford Avenue is traced as the neighborhood shifts from local to global and necessity to luxury. This chapter examines how the decisions of local business owners act to welcome or exclude various residents’ groups, and the implications these decisions have in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.
