Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to the book’s contributions to feminist anthropology, reproductive politics, and scholarship on conservative social movements. It starts with an overview about feminist scholarship on embryos, how embryos became the subject of debate at the turn of the twenty-first century, and how the practice of embryo adoption arose as a solution to “save” embryos. The next section provides an ethnographically descriptive introduction to embryo adoption programs where I conducted research. This book focuses on activities coordinated in and through the Blossom embryo adoption program, a pseudonymous composite featuring qualities of a handful of programs at which I conducted research. The chapter situates embryo adoption within the personhood politics of the US antiabortion movement and then traces how the antiabortion movement gained traction in the realm of assisted reproductive technologies. It situates the US antiabortion movement as the keystone of the reproductive politics that propel the nationalist ambitions of the Christian Right alliance. Finally, the chapter presents an extended consideration of feminist and critical race scholarship on the white savior industrial complex, within which I situate embryo adoption and make a case for wariness of saviorism.
