Abstract
This chapter summarizes how the Ferguson protests highlighted challenges to police-community relations and widened the gap between the proverbial us versus them, but also reopened the debate on the role of police in society and calls for police reform. Reflecting on the protests shows competing priorities police faced in maintaining order and safety alongside supporting public protest. The Ferguson experience was the epitome of the paradox of violence, whereby police wrestled with using force and social reticence against its use. The protest can be best understood as a dynamic interaction of action and reaction between the police and the public. The Ferguson experience underscores the importance of trust and confidence in police and strong police-community relationships. In that regard, the chapter concludes with a summary of reform strategies being implemented to address the pillars of twenty-first-century policing, with aims to not only reduce crime, but importantly, to prioritize policy and practice to facilitate positive police-community relationships, including with Black and other minority communities.
