Abstract
Beginning with a case vignette, the chapter introduces the reader to the cultural imaginary of law, the courts, and the rape trial, focusing on racial inequalities. Cultural narratives remain crucial to understanding sexual assault adjudication despite its increased reliance on forensic technology and expertise. The chapter reviews sociolegal research on rape myths, gender, race, and carceral feminism and how the book contributes to these areas of scholarship. The chapter further highlights the innovative collaborative field methods of its feminist research team. Readers are introduced to specific details about Milwaukee’s legal and social landscape, including the structure of legal statutes and geographic descriptions.
