Abstract
This book concludes with an analysis of enduring trends in the control of public disorders in Paris by focusing on a critical period of upheavals—the “coup of the month club” between February and June 1848. It first considers the problem relating to the nature and extent of unrest and the response of French officials and police to the crisis. It then discusses the tactical challenges faced by the government in dealing with public disorders, with particular emphasis on barricades and secret societies, and the strategies used by the government to control mobs or attroupements. It also examines the February Days and the June Days, with particular emphasis on the organization and political tendencies of the various armed forces, the personalities and planning of the military command structure, and the interaction of governments with their military subordinates. Finally, it analyzes the civil–military relations during the events of 1848 and the French government's defeat of radicalism in the capital, along with the persistence of rebellion after the June Days.
