Abstract
This chapter examines the impact of economic recession and the rise of social movements on Puerto Rico's economic and/or political dynamics, especially on the hegemony of the Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), during the period 1960–1975. It looks at these social and political upheavals, from student mobilizations against the draft into the U.S. armed forces to labor unions fighting several major battles, and the emergence of a new political activism in the Puerto Rican diaspora. The chapter also discusses the fragmentation of the PPD and the elections of 1968, the creation of the Movimiento Pro Independencia and of the newspaper Claridad, and the rise of student activism, organized labor, and other social movements, along with second-wave feminism. It concludes by reflecting on the demise of Operation Bootstrap, originally launched by the PPD under the leadership of Luis Muñoz Marín.
