As I near the midterm of my position as Editor-in-Chief for Neuro-Oncology, this is an opportunity to reflect on my experience and consider areas for improvement and growth. It has been a wonderful privilege to learn and work with the Editorial Board and Oxford University Press (OUP), and it has been important to adapt to the ever-changing world of scientific publishing.
The impact factor of Neuro-Oncology is 13.1 this year. This ranks the Journal 4/296 in Clinical Neurology and 25/333 in the Oncology categories.1 The CiteScore for 2025 is 21.1 and ranks Neuro-Oncology 7th among 403 clinical neurology titles, 14th of 233 cancer research titles, and 18th of 428 oncology titles in the Scopus categories.2 The usage of the Journal also saw a 16% increase from 2024 to 2025 and there was a 41% increase in optional open access publications.
Journal submissions have continued to increase on average by 21% annually since 2023, reflecting the diverse research efforts from the neuro-oncology community and the interest that investigators have in showcasing their work in the Journal. Despite the increase in submissions, we have worked hard to ensure that the editorial speed has remained consistent at an average of 30 days to render a first decision for manuscripts sent for external peer review. Our peer-review process is focused on fair, rigorous, and timely assessment of papers to ensure that high-quality and impactful work is considered. Supporting our sister journals is also a pillar of our operations, especially for the newly launched Neuro-Oncology Pediatrics. This would not be possible without the commitment of the Editorial Board members. We would like to welcome Dr Roberta Rudà, President of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology, and Dr Mitsutoshi Nakada, the Organizing Chair of ASNO 2026, as Associate Editors to manage the review process and help shape the future direction of the journal.
The increase in submissions brings several challenges related to research integrity and reproducibility. The Journal has responded to these issues in several ways. First, thanks to the Data Integrity Committee members, we have established clear processes for handling any irregularity of data that may be reported by editors, reviewers, or readers, aligning with the Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE) guidelines. Second, we have also initiated a new requirement for authors to include a “Data Integrity Supplement”3 which we consider a good investment for accountability and reproducibility. Third, Oxford University Press is working diligently on tools for rigorous upfront screening of submitted manuscripts for the detection of figure irregularities and inappropriate use of artificial intelligence in the generation of content or references. It is important to remind all authors about their responsibility for ensuring the highest level of research standards, to check that references are valid (and have not been retracted at a later date), and to cite the source information relevant to the content. It is also the responsibility of corresponding authors to ensure that Author Contribution/Verification, Conflict of Interest statements, and Funding Sources are available.
Our efforts to foster and train investigators in the publishing enterprise and peer-review process is already providing benefits across all the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) family of journals. We congratulate the graduating class of scholars for 2025-2026 and are pleased to welcome the 2026-2027 cohort of scholars (Table 1). This year we have expanded the cohort from 15 to 20 scholars to accommodate the growing interest among our junior faculty. Special thanks to the planning committee and mentors and the SNO staff for their engagement and support and Elizabeth Martinson, the Journal’s Managing Editor, for her work ensuring scholars and mentors collaborate effectively to provide reviews.
