Abstract

Hexachordal invariance plays a critical role in several of Schoenberg’s hexatonic-based compositions, including the Suite, Op. 29, Ode to Napoleon, Op. 41, and Modern Psalm, Op. 50c. In this article, I utilize contextual transformations in order to unveil specific types of invariant hexachordal relationships in these works—relationships that are often concealed when approached through conventional operators. The contextual transformations that I advance govern entire passages or large sections in the aforementioned compositions. In Schoenberg’s final work, Modern Psalm, these contextual transformations play significant roles in text-music relations.
