Abstract
This chapter provides the background and a historical context for the analysis of self-understanding and introvert self-consciousness to be undertaken in the next chapter. It first re-analyzes some earlier philosophical accounts in developmental terms. It then argues that early naïve psychology is significantly different in several respects from its successor after age four, which is called commonsense psychology. Next, it looks at some new conceptual acquisitions of commonsense psychology that enable—and are symptomatic of—the common understanding of minds emerging after age four. The final section identifies certain neuropsychological developments after age four that create the cognitive opportunities and resources for self-understanding and introvert self-consciousness.
