Abstract

This book delves into representative Federal Beaux-Arts architecture and urban design from the late nineteenth-early twentieth century in territories acquired by the United States of America during the 1898 Spanish-American War (Cuba, Puerto Rico, and The Philippines, among others). It also studies similar architectural and urban design examples from other U.S. possessions from the Progressive Era, such as the former Panama Canal Zone and occupied territories like the Dominican Republic. The book defines these edifices as backdrops for an exceptionalist, expansionist spectacle. It describes them as material evidence of the United States’ geopolitical, historical, and commercial meddling in the internal affairs of the Americas and elsewhere. It also emphasizes the command of the seas via the monopoly of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This significant condition sets up the grounds for this kind of spectacle. Its contents expand into three significant sections. It starts by defining exceptionalism and its role in government U.S. Beaux-Arts Federal architecture. Subsequently, it delves into Beaux-Arts civic architecture in the continental U.S. and Latin America. Finally, it describes the works of relevant designers of these facilities and their urban layouts. As examples of government architecture overseas, these magnificent structures still capture a rich, expansionist Stimmung, reminiscent of Progressive America.
