Like so many before me, I am facing the pleasant task of writing acknowledgments to the many people who have contributed in bringing this book to fruition. As they did, I fear I might forget some who believed in this project and helped me during my many years of research and writing.
I am grateful to former curator Bruce Boyd Raeburn and former associate curators Lynn Abbott and Alaina W. Hébert of the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University; to Eric Seiferth, Molly Reid Cleaver, Jennifer Navarre, and their colleagues at the Williams Research Center of The Historic New Orleans Collection; and to Todd Harvey and his colleagues at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, for their invaluable assistance and support that never failed over the many years I spent researching this book.
Also patient and supportive were former library technician Valérie Asselin and her colleagues at the Archives de folklore et d’ethnologie at Université Laval in Quebec City; Janet Harper, former librarian at the Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College in Chicago; the personnel of the Louisiana Research Collection of the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and the Amistad Research Center, both at Tulane University; the Louisiana Division of the New Orleans Public library; the Earl K. Long Library of the University of New Orleans; the Cajun and Creole Music Collection of the Edith Garland Dupré Library of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University–Newark; the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York City Public Library; and the Warren D. Allen Music Library of Florida State University. To all these librarians, archivists and staff, I am grateful for lending their time and expertise.
