Letter from the Editors

Dear Military Medicine readers,

We have the pleasure of announcing two important developments in the publishing of Military Medicine. We must start, however, by thanking you—our readership—for your continued interest and support. We appreciate the partnerships and efforts among our readers, authors, and reviewers that enable Military Medicine to act as a forum for important scientific and research activities designed to improve federal medicine.

DEVELOPMENT 1: A SPECIAL COLLECTION WITH PODCAST PARTNERSHIP

The first new development is a special collection of Military Medicine articles in partnership with the WarDocs Podcast (https://www.wardocspodcast.com/). The special collection consists of recent articles focused on various approaches for maintaining medical proficiency during low-tempo military operations. The assembled collection, entitled “Military Medicine & WarDocs present: A Ready Medical Force Special Collection,” features an active link to the podcast site. Dr. Jeffrey B. Clark, MG (Retired), Chair of WarDocs, has provided a recorded introduction to the collection. Dr. Douglas W. Soderdahl, COL (Retired), Executive Director of WarDocs, contacted and interviewed the authors of the articles. These interviews expand on the authors’ viewpoints in the articles. The podcasts are accessible through the WarDocs podcast and via links on the Military Medicine journal site in the Special Collection tab. We hope you will find this combination of text and recording will bring the content to life for you.

DEVELOPMENT 2: OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF ADVANCE ACCESS ARTICLES

The second new development is the publishing of a large number of Advance Access articles in the July/August issue.

If you have had a manuscript accepted in the last 2 years, it will have been published as an Advance Access article on the Journal website. The article was published online ahead of print. This designation means the article is slated for inclusion in a numbered issue of the Journal and posted on the Military Medicine website in final, edited form ahead of the full issue. These articles have undergone peer review and can be cited, searched, and accessed by readers. They are considered as the version of record. From an official perspective, however, the publication process is not final until an article has been assigned a volume and issue number and placed into an issue. For various reasons, the number of processed articles outstripped the Journal’s ability to incorporate articles into numbered issues. This led to many articles awaiting issue publication in Advance Access. In order to address this, we have worked with our publisher to incorporate more articles from Advance Access into Journal issues in a timely fashion.

In the July/August issue, we will initiate this effort by publishing approximately 250 articles from the Advance Access queue into the issue. The articles will be published in their entirety in the digital edition of the Journal. The printed version of the Journal will list these articles in the table of contents, directing readers online to read the full articles. Following this larger issue, the volume of accepted articles is expected to be six annual issues with about 60–65 articles. Accepted articles, as before, will be processed and placed into Advance Access and then moved into a regular issue shortly after.

We are excited about these two developments: the issue publication of our Advance Access article queue and the new collaboration with WarDocs. As always, we thank you for your continued support of the Journal.
