Abstract

Subsequent to the armistice that “ended” the Korean conflict in 1953, hot embers remaining in place on the peninsula have periodically been fanned to flame by North Korean aggression. In order to provide the medical support necessary to counter this constant threat, the Army's newest and smallest medical command, the 18th Medical Command, was activated on Aug 161984. This article reviews the historical perspective of the threat, explains the mission of the command, highlights recent readiness initiatives, and describes efforts to provide American soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and their dependents in Korea with the best of modern health care.
