Two Years After Being Named Poet Laureate in a Ceremony at Brussels, Nikolaus Mameranus (1500-1567) joined Philip's entourage at the court of the prince's wife, Queen Mary of England, from March through May, 1557.1 Before his departure from London, Mameranus addressed two letters to Mary that are now in the National Archives (SP 11/14 nos. 12 and 13, occupying fols 32–37 and 38 respectively). The latter itemizes books that Mameranus presented to the Queen on 16 and 22 May, and it reminds her also of the other letter, a ‘petition ’that Mameranus had submitted on 22 May to the King and Queen advising them (a) to institute new denominations of 'small coin ’(minuta moneta) in England; (b) to facilitate freer trade between England and the Low Countries by establishing English and Flemish coinage of equivalent value; and (c) to require weekly sermons in every English parish, explaining the Gospels in the vernacular ‘for the instruction of the people toward an improved and emended life’.2
