My hands hurt all the time now. I sleep on them in ways that pull my arms ready to strike nails with a hammer, push the bar of a chainsaw through the dark rings of a tree. I get up—can’t sleep good like this—tell my hands to relax, and tell myself, “The nails will get driven tomorrow. The firewood will get cut, and we’ll be warm in winter.” The rest of the night I’m half-dreaming under a moon our skylight shows as a bright nickel in one corner, hours later as a dime above my feet, but the ache won’t quit.
My wife, Tina, and I live in a glass cabin we are building by hand in rural Alabama because we don’t have money enough to hire someone to do it. Eight years in, what is necessary is what shapes our life.
We purchase drinking water five gallon jugs at a time for our cooler. We haul water for cleaning purposes from the local water authority 250 gallons, 1 ton, at a time in an IBC tote on the back of Ruby, our ’98 Dodge truck. Ruby manages somehow to chug up the hill. Then the ton is gravity fed through garden hoses to a second tote that sits on stilts next to our cabin. Takes four hours for it to drain out.
