Smith, Bruce L. R., 'Dorothy and Dad', Lincoln Gordon: Architect of Cold War Foreign Policy (Lexington, KY , 2015; online edn, Kentucky Scholarship Online, 21 Jan. 2016), https://doi.org/10.5810/kentucky/9780813156552.003.0001, accessed 8 May 2025.
Abstract
The Gordons are Jewish immigrants from Russia who rise to modest prosperity. Dorothy Gordon, Lincoln’s mother, launches her musical career with the help of her young son, who turns the pages for her as she plays the piano and sings. He becomes comfortable in the “helper” role. He grows up in a secular home with Americanism as his only religion and identity and looks to the future and progress. The booming New York City of the Progressive Era, with technological advance and reform ideas in the air, shapes his outlook. The Gordon boys are set for professional and public service careers, not business and not politics directly.
