C hristopher T uckett , since 2013 Emeritus Professor at Oxford, has for long been one of the masters of Gospel criticism. This collection of no fewer than 28 of his essays spanning 29 years (1982–2011) of engagement in depth with a wide range of questions and a wide range of international scholars addressing the same issues is as good an introduction to and review of Gospel criticism over the last generation as can be found anywhere else.
Part I contains four essays on the Synoptic Problem, spanning the years 1984–2011. The first is a good example of the convincing way Tuckett makes the case for Markan priority. On ‘Mark and Q’ he demonstrates his mastery of the text and of the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments used to support the thesis of some degree of interdependence between Mark and Q. As a true believer in Q, he is well able to demonstrate the probability of its existence, even if its dimensions remain unclear. Chapter 4 is an impressive debunking of the arguments used to support both the two-Gospel hypothesis (Farmer) and the Farrar hypothesis, while acknowledging that the two-document hypothesis is not without its problems.
