Abstract
Chronic physical illness in the child has been shown to have a deleterious effect on the marital dyad and siblings as well as the ill child. Previous research demonstrating the effect of chronic illness in the child on various family members including the child is reviewed, and suggestions are made concerning further avenues that need exploration. Various techniques used to ameliorate the psychological impact of chronic disease explored. Because of the overall effect on family function, intervention which involves all members of the family is suggested as the most fruitful method. Because of the need to evaluate these interventions, a sample Goal Attainment Scale is presented and briefly discussed.
