Nicki Cohen’s book, Advanced Methods of Music Therapy Practice: Analytical Music Therapy, the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, and Vocal Psychotherapy, examines the development of four advanced methods of music therapy: Analytical Music Therapy (AMT), the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM), Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (NR-MT), and Vocal Psychotherapy (VP). This book explores the conception and development of these four methods and the relationships between them within the United States and United Kingdom through qualitative analysis of interviews, publications, and observations of music therapy sessions within these respective methods. Cohen presents this book as her exploration of the meaning and potentials of music therapy through advanced music therapy methods based upon her own experiences training in BMGIM. This exploration establishes an essential contextualization from which the reader can more readily appreciate the text.
As a whole, the book is written as a thorough qualitative study presented in a manner that is immediately relatable. Cohen introduces each advanced method of music therapy with personal anecdotes of her own experiences within these approaches, giving the book a personal touch that brings the information to life. Her narrative of each method’s conception and development is written with respect and care. The book in general reads like an in-depth and personable conversation with the author about her journey of understanding these four methods, making the material accessible for all.
