On the cover: Confocal microscopy showing a malarial exoerythrocytic parasite (red) developing in Hepa 1-6 liver cells in vitro. Nuclei of Hepa 1-6 cells are seen in blue. Within the parasite exoerythrocytic form are the nuclei of more parasites, which appear purple. In vivo, these developing parasites would rupture from the exoerythrocytic form, initiating the blood stage of infection. This image was taken 48 h after sporozoites (dissected from Plasmodium berghei-carrying Anopheline mosquito salivary glands) were harvested and used to infect liver cells. (See Hobbs et al., on pp. 134-41).
