On 24 November 2003, the field of virology lost a respected scientist, colleague, and valued friend. After a courageous battle with lymphoma, Dr. Stephen Sacks passed away in Vancouver at the age of 55. Our hearts and thoughts are with his wife Marika, his daughter Rebecca, and his son Adrian. Marika was both Steve's life partner and his partner in Viridae Clinical Sciences, which Steve established in 1993 to further his groundbreaking research in the study of chronic viral illnesses and the care of affected patients.
Born in Akron, Ohio, Steve was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. His internal medicine training continued in Canada and included a year as chief medical resident at Toronto General Hospital. Steve began his research career in infectious diseases and antiviral therapeutics under the tutelage of Dr. Tom Merigan at Stanford University, where he performed some of the earliest work on the use of antivirals for treatment of chronic hepatitis B. After his fellowship, he joined the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and rose through the ranks to become a professor of medicine and, most recently, served in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
