The leading Commentary on the UN Charter is now available in an updated edition. While the text of the Charter has not changed for decades, the editors, together with a large team of contributors, provided an in-depth review of relevant State practice, practice of international organizations, and case law, augmenting the text by more than a quarter as compared to the previous edition of 2012. The article-by-article commentary is again preceded by an instructive introduction to the drafting history of the Charter, the activities towards its reform, and considerations on its interpretation. ‘Special Sections’ are devoted to the introduction of Chapters VII (Actions with Respect to Threats to the Peace, Breaches of the Peace, and Acts of Aggression) and VIII (Regional Arrangements), as well as to important topics not specifically addressed in the Charter. To the latter, new Special Sections on Climate Change and the Human Rights Council are added in the present edition. The result of this impressive update invites a critical stock-tacking of achievements, failures, and perspectives of the World Organization.
