It seems ironic that a book about annihilation of space and time took so much of both to complete. I would like to thank some folks who helped me along the way, from the first time I saw the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in person to this project’s completion years later.
Much of the work for this book was done at West Texas A&M University, where I am fortunate to be surrounded by dedicated colleagues: I thank Chelsea Ball, Tim Bowman, Bruce Brasington, Elizabeth Clark, Paul Clark, Courtney Crowley, Kris Drumheller, Marty Kuhlman, Byron Pearson, Matt Reardon, Wade Shaffer, Jean Stuntz, and Bryan Vizzini. I also thank our students, especially members of urban history graduate seminar: Katey Denney, Patrick Diepen, Eliana Flores, Edie Heuss, Kirbi Kelley-Diaz, and Jose Martinez. The many folks at West Texas, past and present, who enjoy discussing culture and its meanings include Daniel Bloom, Ryan Brooks, David Craig, Deana Craighead, Renea Dauntes, Tim Foster, Nick Gerlich, Matthew and Ana Harrison, Daniel Helbert, Kimberly Hieb, Alex Hunt, Jenny Inzerillo, Eric Meljac, Laura Mueller, Jenni Opalinski, John Pleming, Bonnie Roos, Steve Severn, the late Charles Townsend, and Amy Von Lintel. Ashley Pinkham once asked me why I was writing about her hometown, and I hope this book answers that question; I thank her for her support and friendship. Institutional funding for research was provided by a West Texas Foundation grant and a Faculty Development and Scholarly/Creative Activities (FDSCA) grant from Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities (FAH); I thank Jessica Mallard for her leadership of FAH.
