I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.
—Philippians 1:3
As is so often the case, the origin of this project came from a rather unexpected source. On the campus of McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, there is a spacious carpeted room on the main floor of the chapel called the Circuit Riders Room. When I was an undergraduate History major at McKendree, this comfortable gathering space was used for a variety of social activities, including Campus Ministry and Newman Center meetings, bible studies, campus socials, a quiet study area, and mission trip reunions. It was a room I frequented often, but being raised Catholic, the term “circuit rider” was unfamiliar to me. Investigating the significance of the room’s name unlocked a rich and fascinating history of the itinerant preacher. I was intrigued by the lifestyle of these horseback preachers and even more intrigued by the challenge of creating new churches in the pioneer settlements of antebellum Illinois. Though my focus has broadened since my McKendree Senior Thesis—both religiously and geographically—I owe a lot to my experience as a McKendree student for first kindling my interest in religious history and its role in nurturing bonds of civic unity and western identity in nineteenth-century America.
