The volume Chinese Lexicography in the Twentieth Century explores, from the socio-cultural perspective, the making of various dictionaries and the development of lexicographic theories in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan over the 20th century. It discusses not only the impacts of social events, such as the May Fourth Movement, the Anti-Japanese War, the Great Cultural Revolution, and the reform and opening up (Abella et al., 2024), on the development of lexicography in China, but also the contribution of modern linguistics and computer science to the evolution of lexicography in China, thus providing a broad overview of Chinese lexicography in the 20th century.

This volume comprises seven chapters. The first five chapters detail the development of philological, bilingual, encyclopaedic, learners’, and electronic dictionaries in mainland China in the 20th century. The sixth chapter focuses on the dictionaries published in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The final chapter explores theoretical aspects of Chinese lexicography.
