India is not only the world's most populous nation and fastest-growing economy, but it is also a major player in the field of energy. The country's energy consumption has doubled in the past 20 years and demand is set to increase substantially in the future, as a result of population growth, urbanization and industrialization. This will have a significant impact on global energy markets, as well as on efforts to fight climate change. India is already the third largest contributor to global emissions after the United States and China, although its carbon footprint per capita is lower. As India develops, it needs to get its energy system right. India faces the daunting task of reconciling economic growth with decarbonization, while at the same time providing energy access, security and affordability to its people. Annika Styczynski has edited a very timely book on the evolution of India's energy system. It fills a gap in the existing literature as there are few comprehensive analyses of the country's energy policies and economy. The book consists of 12 individual contributions that cover different aspects of India's energy system, and the focus is mainly on the supply side and the various energy sources fuelling India's economy. It is impossible to do justice to all chapters in this review, but a few stand out.
