The issues raised in this edited collection find their beginnings in discussions that took place in June 2013, during a conference in Taipei called “Except Asia: Agamben’s Work in Transcultural Perspective,” where we felt the need to further gauge the importance of theoretical work in the studies of East Asia. We feel extremely fortunate to be able to continue these discussions with many scholars who, from their respective locations around the world, also seek to problematize received boundaries in the practices of theory, art, and politics in East Asia. Therefore, our thanks first and foremost go to our contributors for having joined this conversation and engaged variously with the problems highlighted in the book.
We would also like to thank Yutaka Yoshida, Kun Xian Shen, Kazuma Morita, Anne McKnight, Christophe Thouny, and Keith Vincent for their timely support on editorial matters. Mayumo would like to express his gratitude to the staff, colleagues, and students at the Graduate School of Language and Society, Hitotsubashi University, for maintaining this unique interdisciplinary space, where problematizing institutionalized limitations is the norm and not the exception. He would also like to thank the following people in or from Berkeley and San Francisco for their support during the academic year 2017–2018: Trinh T. Minh-ha, Weihong Bao, Miryam Sas, Bertrand Augst, Stephanie Cannizzo, James Cha, and Daniel Kim. Steve would like to thank Paula Amad, Jinsoo An, and Todd Henry for their support and friendship during the production of this book. He is also grateful for the generous research support from San Francisco State University that made this and other projects possible.
