Abstract
This chapter provides reports from administrative officers' visits and trips to the Lesser Islands composed of Ping Chau, Ni Kwu Chau (Hei Ling Chau), Chau Kung To, Tsing Yi Island, Cheung Chau, Po Toi Island, and the Soko Islands. It explains that the islands are smaller in size but not in importance, for the Lesser Islands include two of the District's largest centres of population, Cheung Chau, with a population of 18,500, and Ping Chau, the population of which varies between 3,500 and 3,800 depending on the number of workers being employed by the Great China Match Factory. It further reports that four of the islands are important as markets and noted for their industries: Cheung Chau (soy sauce, preserved fruit, shipbuilding and repairing, salt fish, leather), Ma Wan (shrimp paste), and Tsing I (lime kilns).
