Diaspora and Identity: Japanese Brazilians in Brazil and Japan

This book examines the historical formation and transformation of the Japanese diaspora in São Paulo, Brazil, and the Brazilian diaspora in Japan. Much has been published on Japanese immigration to Brazil, Japanese descendants in Brazil, and their “return” labor migration to Japan (dekassegui). My work differs from all previous studies for its extensive use of life history as a major methodology, careful treatment of gendered norms and gender relations, and examination of dekassegui’s historical impact on Japanese Brazilian experiences and identities. Throughout my research, I found it difficult fitting any of my informants into the simplistic representations of identity made in preceding studies. In short, this book illustrates the nuances and complexities of identity formation over time and space, in relation to nation, ethnicity, gender, class, and race.
I owe great debts to many individuals and institutions. My deep gratitude goes to the people who agreed to be interviewed; this book would never have been written without their stories. In São Paulo, I owe thanks to the Museu Histórico da Imigração Japonesa no Brasil, especially Yasumi Nakayama; the Museu da Imigração do Estado de São Paulo, especially Midory Kimura Figuchi; the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo; and the Arquivo Municipal de São Paulo. In Japan, my thanks are due to the Modern Japanese Political History Materials Room of the National Diet Library; the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum; the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan; the Nippon Rikkokai Foundation; the Hamamatsu Foundation for International Communication and Exchange; and the Comunidade Brasileira de Kansai.
