Abstract
This chapter describes Rohs approaching college graduation after attending evening classes for several years while at the same time working full-time in law enforcement. After massive city layoffs left him unemployed, Ed returned to St. Vincent's as a dorm counsellor. The chapter discusses his struggle to put to rest his ongoing argument with himself and his friends from St. Vincent's about whether accepting this job meant he couldn't make it on his own and was still emotionally institutionalized, and describes his new perception of the institution from an adult/employee point of view and the improvements made by St. Vincent's since his departure in 1965. The chapter explains why he suddenly quit without giving notice to take a job at another home, how he subsequently burned out and again quit a job without giving notice. It describes Rohs struggle to rebuild his professional reputation and become gainfully employed, when, after eight months he landed a job at a “hard-to-place” group home for adolescents in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. He worked with boys who had been admitted to the home because they had been rejected by at least six other foster care agencies.
